A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
