Colombian President Declares 'I Will Return to Arms Again' if US Invades.

Donald Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have escalated the rhetoric of their exchange, heightening strains in their relations after American military units attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He has cocaine mills and production sites and is not going to be doing it very long," the US president stated.

Escalating Tensions and Accusations

Talking to reporters over the weekend, the US president threatened analogous military action against Colombia, asserting the nation is “very sick too” and led by a problematic figure who likes making the drug and selling it to America."

While Colombia stands as the leading source of the narcotic, no proof exists linking President Gustavo Petro, elected two years ago, is personally involved in the trade.

A Deteriorating Relationship

The country was historically a staunch collaborator of the US in the campaign combating drug cartels and benefited from bipartisan support in Washington, yet ties have worsened markedly since Trump assumed the presidency.

The nation's illicit drug economy is predominantly run by criminal organizations like the Clan del Golfo, the ELN guerrilla group and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, a large contingent of whom demobilised subsequent to a landmark accord.

Colombia's Firm Answer

In response to a query whether a military operation comparable to Venezuela was being considered for Colombia, Trump said: "It sounds good to me."

Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who demobilised in the last century, rejected these allegations. "I am not illegitimate and certainly not involved in narcotics," he declared.

"He comments uninformed. End the false accusations," he wrote in a message.

"Should American forces attack rural communities, they will turn into thousands of guerrillas across the countryside. And if they detain the nation's leader, which many of the country holds in high esteem, they will release the ‘jaguar’ of the people," the president cautioned.

From Guerrilla to Leader

The president dedicated part of his youth belonging in the left-wing M-19 armed organization though it is believed that he never took part in armed clashes. After demobilizing, he was involved in creating the constitutional rewrite in 1991 subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He served as mayor of the Colombian capital prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I pledged not to touch a weapon again ... but for Colombia I shall resume weapons once more," he vowed.

Reinforced Protection along with Cross-Political Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the president’s security detail had received additional support.

A segment of Colombia’s right wing opposition have sided with Trump, yet figures from across the political spectrum have rejected the possibility of an invasion on Colombia.

Political and Economic Pressure

Washington revoked the president's entry visa following he called on American soldiers to refuse orders that violate law. Later, in October, the US enacted financial sanctions against the president, his wife and several key allies.

Concurrently as the US increased its troop levels in the Caribbean and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces executed attacks against vessels in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
