With an announcement that pairs financial support with a firm ultimatum, the United States has committed $2 billion to support United Nations emergency relief operations. Yet, this aid was accompanied by a blunt admonition for the international body: it must "adapt or die."
A Major Pledge During Broader Budget Reductions
This commitment came against a backdrop of substantial reductions in American funding for humanitarian operations. Further cuts are expected from other key donors including Britain and Germany. The official, President Trump's Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, made the statement alongside the UN's top humanitarian official.
"This contribution will save millions of lives," affirmed the UN's relief coordinator. However, the $2 billion constitutes only a fraction of America's traditional spending, which previously totaled approximately $17 billion just a few years ago.
Aid Accompanied by Major Restrictions
This new American funding comes with unconditional. It prioritizes only seventeen nations, such as Haiti, Syria, and Sudan. Significantly, Afghanistan and Yemen have been denied funding.
The US official justified this by pointing to evidence that there, aid money were being diverted to the Taliban. "President Trump will never tolerate a single penny of public funds supporting organizations designated as terrorists," he asserted.

Issuing a direct ultimatum, the representative told the UN that it must "evolve or become obsolete." He emphasized that the American "piggy bank is not open to those organizations that just want to cling to outdated ways."
